Travel Information

Xi'an is situated in the very heart of China's transportation network. It is easy to reach by air, train and bus.





By Air

Xi'an is served by the Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (IATA: XIY), which is located around 45 kilometers northwest of the city centre, about one hour's drive. As the fourth largest airport in China, there are several flights available to the major tourist stops, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dunhuang, Fuzhou,Harbin, Hohhot, Kunming, Lanzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Xining, Urumuqi, Lhasa and other cities within China. Overseas visitors can choose Beijing or Shanghai as the transit city. There are frequently daily filghts connected to Xi'an. International flights are also available to Bangkok, Seoul as well as Nagoya, Fukuoka, Niigata, Tokyo and Hiroshima in Japan.

There are taxi and the airport shuttle bus available to the city from the airport. Visitors can take a taxi to the city from the airport for about CNY 150/ GBP 11.

By Train

Xi'an serves as an important train network hub for Central China, the Northwest and Southwest regions. There are daily trains available to major cities around China. The train station is located at the north end of Jiefang Road, in the northeast of the city, outside of the city wall. The foreigners tickets office is on the south side of the station on the second floor, and is open daily from 8:30 to 11:30 am and from 2:30 to 5:30 pm.

Located at the center of China, it often takes one day to travel from Xi'an to other cities by train. Approximate journey times to other major cities: Beijing 14-18 hours, Chengdu 16-27 hours, Chongqing 14 hours, Guangzhou 24 hours, Kunming 36-53 hours, Lanzhou 10-13 hours, Lhasa 36 hours, Shanghai 18-24 hours, Urumqi 31-56 hours, Wuhan 14-18 hours and Zhengzhou 7 hours.

In Xi'an, it is very convenient for you to get to the railway station by city bus wherever you are. But please pay attention that there are several stops around the station. Fortunately, all of them are no more than 200 meters from the station.

By Bus

The main long distance bus station is located across from main railway station. Approximate journey times to major local cities: Huashan 2-3 hours, Lanzhou 8-10 hours, Luoyang 7-10 hours, Taiyuan 12 hours and Zhengzhou about 9-12 hours.

By Coach

There are three long distance coach stations in Xi'an and coaches run to central China area and beyond. The Xi'an Coach Station is located just to the northwest of the railway station square. There are daily coaches to Yan'an, Lanzhou in Gansu province, Hanzhong and many other places. The other two coach stations are, Nanguan Coach Station and East City Coach Station. There are coaches from the East City Coach Station to Huashan Mountain.

Local Transportation

There are public buses or tourism buses to every attraction in and around the city with pick up points throughout the city.


Visa

To travel in China, citizens of virtually all other countries need a visa. If you are a non-Chinese citizen, you need to apply for a Business Visit (F) Visa at your local Chinese Embassy or Consulate, which requires an invitation letter from an organization in China. For VIE'08, the host organization in China is Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Requirements for Business Visit (F) Visa

  • Your valid & actual passport which must have at least six (6) months of remaining validity with at least one blank visa page in it.
  • One completed Visa Application Form with one passport photo (black & white or color is acceptable).
  • An invitation letter from the host organization in China, i.e. Xi'an Jiaotong University.
  • Invitation Letter for F Visa
